A very striking statistic mentioned by Mike Lazaridis for the BlackBerry World mentioned a few minutes ago, the company has sold 150 million smartphones in the past 12 years, of which approximately 15 million were sold in the last quarter. Compared with the other two major competing manufacturers:

  • Apple has sold 100 million iPhones since its launch in June 2007.
  • Nokia has sold 108 million mobile devices only in the first quarter of 2011.

RIM seems to be happy with the direction they are taking with their devices, with new versions of its operating system and its new Playbook , agreements with Microsoft and other ads that make these days, but long-term question should be: how move from a company that offered a few years ago and unique proprietary services (read: push mail) to be one of the bunch at a time when the reception of information in near real time is something that offered all operating systems.
