Linus Torvalds: "Linux competes with itself, not Windows"

Pragmatic. This is Linus Torvalds, the man with just over 20 years of age, and makes 20 years , created Linux and then led its development into what we all know today.

Were also pragmatic responses to LinuxFr.org , one of the most interesting interviews I have read and profuse Finnish programmer, one that I recommend reading from beginning to end, but now I want to tell / share with a handful of them all.

Software licensing and ethics

Massage the GPL and eligible under the assumption that is ethical, Torvalds said he had a negative opinion and a very personal. First, he said, scorn

people who try to promote the use of LPG as a matter "ethics" [...] is an absolute mess. Why? Because ethics is a private matter. Each time you use an argument of style "someone else should" use "something" you're not being ethical, but only a stupid sanctimonious [...]

(Did anyone think RMS ?)

Regarding his personal opinion, Torvalds says he chose the GPLv2 because it coincides with what she does and likes: scheduling, sharing code for others to enjoy, expect a fair-share payment equally, to continue developing. Others prefer licenses like BSD, and "okay, it's their choice."

Linux and the desktop

Each new year is the year of Linux on the desktop. Say. Until that happens, Linux is ready to dominate almost any other field of computing, including mobile computing. For Torvalds, kernel-side is not much to do

except to continue to improve in general and ensure that we are, technically, the best option.

Linus appreciates the extent achieved by Android between the main mass of users and notes that the desktop market is difficult because there are many "network effects" around, in particular social aspects related to the adoption of new technology.

Linus, the creator

Linus created Linux and Git. Both software with a radical impact between users and developers. Git, for example, is the tool that revolutionized the way we manage software projects, platform startups like GitHub, in turn home to thousands of open source projects.

For Linus, his merit has less to do with genius and with dogged persistence. And the facts are clear. The man has spent half of his life leading Linux destination successfully and legitimately.

Linus and patents

I have admit that I do not like patents [...] I'm good at what I do, I think some people are better when it comes to fighting in trouble patents.

Android

A Torvalds not sad at all that Android is a Linux-project resulting from a fork - in fact think it's a good thing because it is valid and enriching.

For me, the key issue of open source is its ability to derive (and also the ability for the forks back with input, should be well done).

I think the fork of Android developers forced the main code to look seriously some of the issues that have Android [...] Eventually, I hope (and think), Android will return to the main code of the kernel. But it will probably take more time and effort.

Windows

And here the title of this post, which shows what I say about Torvalds, who direct, plain, says the Linux address is not in any way in the footsteps of Microsoft Windows. Linus Linux just want to improve.
