Free software is everywhere. Operating systems thousands of desktops in the world, millions of mobile devices as well. Web servers myriad of sites visited daily, even in the browser you use for it. The free software has had considerable success in these areas, but what about the Internet services of today? In particular, what about social networking? Facebook and Twitter, two of the major social networks, but are based in free software and open versions do not offer full versions of themselves in code for anyone to mount their own Facebook or Twitter server just following the proper documentation and without licensing problems. Two free proposals to these social networks are Identi.ca to Twitter and the highly anticipated, even in alpha stage, Diaspora . And what about alternatives to other social networks? Are alternatives to Flickr or DevianArt free? Well, that's what GNU Mediablogin wants to be (and that little monster is their mascot)
The GNU project is keen to do so has serious concerns about the "centralization and ownership" of online media, what does "carry the web of a system highly resistant to chilling system fragility." Mediagoblin's speech is simple: that people can take over your information and someone has to make possible. All this goes hand in hand with ideological statements Stallman against the software as a service , and lack of power of the user information. For now GNU Mediablogin is under development, seeking support from the community to grow as software as a service. From my point of view, its existence is necessary to balance the range of options that Internet users have today. And, as things stand, in terms of social networks are like when only one operating system and browser ruled the world.
